DJ? Here’s How To Plan Your First Gig

Your first gig is easier to manage when you treat it as a room full of people, not a milestone for your profile. Start by being clear on what you are offering. That could be a DJ set, a live performance, or a night you are putting on yourself. Know the mood you want, the space it suits, and what you need to do the job properly.

Talk through the practical details early. Confirm the date, set time, sound setup, who is responsible for promotion, and how you will get in and out of the venue. Put the important points in writing, even if the booking comes through friends. Misunderstandings are common when everyone assumes somebody else has handled the basics.

Prepare for the room, not just your bedroom. Test your music and equipment, bring what you have agreed to bring, and have a backup for the things you rely on. If you are DJing, organise your selections so you can respond to the crowd without searching through a mess. If you are performing live, rehearse the transitions and setup until they feel calm.

Invite people directly, but do not promise a packed venue. Give friends the information they need and let the promoter lead the wider campaign if that is their role. A good first night can be modest. What people remember is whether you were prepared, on time, and enjoyable to work with.

Afterward, thank the promoter, venue staff, and anyone who helped. Make a note of what worked and what you would change before the details blur. Your next opportunity is more likely to come from being reliable and respectful than from acting like the night was bigger than it was.
